Airfarewatchdog just released the results of a poll of more than 1,300 travelers, asking them if they will be flying for this holiday season. Almost half (46%) plan to take to the skies—up 53% from 2016 and almost double from 2015. See below for full results:

Will you be flying for the holidays this year?

• Yes, I always fly for the holidays - 31% (up from 18% last year)
• Yes, this is the first time in several years that I'll be flying - 15% (up from 12% last year)
• No, the skies are too crowded - 14% (up from 13% last year)
• No, I'd rather drive a few extra hours than have to deal with the delays and long lines - 15% (down from 21% last year)
• No, it's too expensive - 25% (down from 36% last year)

We aren’t surprised that there is a spike this season. We are seeing less people take to the roads to drive to their destinations, a 29% decrease compared to last year. At the same time we are seeing a steady decline in the number of those that feel like flying is too expensive. This sentiment can be attributed to the recent pricing competition amongst legacy and discount carriers that seem to have travelers feeling that even though holiday fares are more expensive, they’re attainable.
