Gas prices regularly rise and fall, and recently we have seen them climb once again. As long as you have to pay higher prices to fill up, you might as well earn the most rewards possible while you do. The ideal credit cards for gas purchases will offer you additional points, miles or cash back at the pump.

Here are some of the top credit cards for buying gas.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

While it offers cash back instead of travel rewards, this card is exceptionally generous when purchasing groceries and gas. You earn 6% cash back on up to $6,000 (then 1%) spent each calendar year at US supermarkets, and unlimited 3% cash back at US gas stations and at select US department stores. New accounts receive a $200 statement credit after spending $1,000 on purchases within three months. There’s a $95 annual fee for this card.

Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express

This card offers 4x points at US restaurants as well as at US gas stations, and wireless telephone services purchased directly from US service providers, and on US shipping services. You also earn 6x points on eligible purchases at participating SPG and Marriott Rewards hotels and 2x points elsewhere. New applicants can earn 75,000 bonus points after using the card to make $3,000 in new purchases within three months of account opening. Other benefits include complimentary Silver Elite status and Gold Elite status when you spend $30,000 (effective January 1, 2019, the spend threshold will increase to $35,000) on eligible purchases in a calendar year. There’s a $95 annual fee for this card that’s waived the first year, and no foreign transaction fees.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®

This card now offers 2 AAdvantage® miles for every dollar spent on gas and restaurant purchases, as well as for eligible American Airlines purchases. New applicants can earn up to 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles. You earn 40,000 miles after making $2,000 in purchases within three months of account opening, and another 10,000 after making a total of $6,000 in purchases within 12 months of account opening. You also get priority boarding, a 25% savings on in-flight purchases when you use your card, and a free checked bag. There’s a $95 annual fee for this card that’s waived the first 12 months.

Citi Premier Card

This card offers you 3X Points on travel, including gas stations, and 2X points on dining out and entertainment. New applicants can earn 50,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on their card within three months of account opening. These points are worth $625 towards airfare when booked through the ThankYou® Travel Center, or can be transferred to airline miles. There’s a $95 annual fee for this card that’s waived the first year.

Hilton Honors American Express Ascend Card

This card offers you a substantial 6X Hilton Honors Bonus Points for each dollar of eligible purchases on your card at U.S. gas stations, along with U.S. restaurants, and U.S. supermarkets, too. It also gives you complimentary Gold status in the Hilton Honors program. In addition, you can earn top-tier Diamond status after spending $40,000 on eligible purchases with your card in a calendar year. Gold status offers you bonus points, room upgrades, and free breakfasts. Diamond status includes executive lounge access and the ability to gift status to others.
