Delta Air Lines is scrapping the $150 fee it charges for checking specialty sporting equipment such as golf clubs, surfboards, and bikes. As of today, passengers will pay standard rates for first, second, or third checked bags, with checked sports equipment counting towards their bag allowance. (Tickets purchased before July, may still be subject to the previous $150 rate).

For a domestic flight, that will bring the cost down from $150 to $30, or, if your item is in addition to a first checked bag, $70 in total for both. That's assuming there are no additional overweight bag fees that would apply.

You may recall that American Airlines also eliminated its oversized equipment fees back in late May.

While it's always great to see an airline roll back a fee, passengers looking for the cheapest option might consider Southwest if possible. Like Delta and American, Southwest counts sporting equipment towards baggage allowances, too, but the first two checked items are free of charge, excluding some oversized items.
